Born in Matagalpa, Nicaragua, in 1959, he holds a degree in Educational Sciences with a focus on Biology from UNAN-Managua and a PhD in Prehistory, Anthropology, and Archaeology from the Sorbonne University of Paris I (Panthéon-Sorbonne). For 20 years, he worked in archaeological research and management positions at the Nicaraguan Institute of Culture (INC). He served as Director of the Department of Archaeology at the Cultural Heritage Office and as Director of the Historical Site of León Viejo Ruins. He has been an Associate Researcher in the Archaeology of the Americas unit (8096) at the French National Centre for Scientific Research (CNRS), and at the Institute of History of Nicaragua and Central America (IHNCA-UCA), as well as Scientific Director of Èveha-Nicaragua, specialists in preventive archaeology.
He has led cultural impact studies, including: three Archaeological Impact Studies for the La Sirena, Los Calpules, and Monte Grande reservoirs in the Viejo River basin in Matagalpa and Estelí; the Archaeological Impact Assessment for the Somotillo-Guasaule road; and the Cultural Impact Study at San Ramón School in León, as part of the León Municipality’s architectural restoration project. He has also directed archaeological research projects such as: Archaeology of the Momotombo Volcano and Momotombito Island in León (2010–2011); the archaeological and ethnographic expedition in San José de Bocay, Jinotega (2014–2016); and The León Viejo Project in Time and Space (2016–2020). He is a full member of the Nicaraguan Academy of Geography and History and a founding member of the Ulúa-Matagalpa Scientific Cultural Foundation.
In the Caribbean, his work and research have focused on the municipality of Corn Island, where he lived for 14 months. Between 2008 and 2009, he worked as an anthropological advisor to the Indigenous community of Little Corn Island, coordinating the Cultural Values Recovery Project in Little Corn Island, RAAS, Nicaragua. Later, from 2011 to 2012, he served as a consultant for the Corn Island Municipality and the company INCALM, leading the Diagnosis of Tangible and Intangible Cultural Heritage of the Corn Island Municipality, financed by Nuevo FISE. This study remains the only heritage inventory that includes both terrestrial archaeological sites and submerged cultural heritage on the two islands. Since 2024, he has served as Deputy Director of the Proyecto Arqueólogico del Municipio de Corn Island (PAMCI). As part of his ongoing research, he is working on a book titled 500 años del Municipio de Corn Island.
He has teaching experience in the subjects of Pre-Columbian Cultures and Anthropology at the Central American University (UCA); Art and Culture History at the Catholic University (UNICA); Ethnoecology, Archaeology, and Museology at UNAN-Managua; and Introduction to Anthropology at UCA and Juan Pablo II University in Matagalpa. He has also served as a thesis advisor and examiner for UNAN, UNI, MINED in Managua, and UNAM in Mexico. Additionally, he has been a trainer for the national tourist guide certification programme for INTUR, where he teaches courses on Cultural Heritage and Archaeology, and he trains the Tourist Police in the same subjects.
He is the author of seven books, including Dioses perdidos y encontrados… (2020), and co-author of three books on the history of Managua and eight on history and archaeology. His most recent publications demonstrate his strong commitment and valuable contribution to the nation: Reflexiones V centenario de la resistencia Indígena en Nicaragua, Estatuaria Prehispánica de la isla de Ometepe… (2023) y Arqueología del volcán Momotombo… (2023). He is also the sole author of more than 75 scientific articles published in journals from Nicaragua and abroad, in Spanish, English, French, and German.
He has received several awards, including Young Cultural Researcher in 1996, the “Andrés Vega Bolaños” Award from the AGHN in the 2004 National History Contest, and between 2014 and 2016, awards for three books on the history of Managua’s neighbourhoods by the Historical Heritage Directorate of the Managua Municipality.
He currently works as an independent consultant in research and training in archaeology, anthropology, and museums. He also provides specialised advisory services to collectors of heritage assets. He actively supports private and municipal development projects and/or environmental and cultural impact studies, practising preventive archaeology, monument restoration, and helping avoid and/or mitigate potential impacts in historic, archaeological, and paleontological areas and sites.
