Shayron Tower

Shayron Tower is the founder and director of The Corn Islands Virtual Library and co-founder and director of The Corn Islands Virtual Museum. He is a specialist in intercultural and digital communication, a cultural promoter, photographer, and advocate for education, environmental sustainability, and youth wellbeing.

Born and raised on the Corn Islands, Shayron has always felt a deep connection to his community’s history and culture. From a young age, he began promoting local identity through social media and a television and radio programme he founded as a teenager called Juventud al Aire and Corn Island People Hour, respectively. He was also a member of a youth band called Island Stars, where he played the piano and contributed to preserving local and Caribbean musical traditions.

He holds a bachelor's degree in Social Communication from the National Autonomous University of Nicaragua (UNAN-León) and a master's degree in International Relations from the University of Sussex in the United Kingdom. He also holds a specialisation in the management of conflict in intercultural contexts.

Over the years, Shayron has documented cultural events such as Maypole celebrations, Christmas carolling, and Emancipation Day, as well as recorded oral histories from elders and historians about the islands’ past. His work often involves collaboration with researchers, academics, government bodies, and media organisations. He has shared insights about Nicaragua and the Caribbean in international settings, including at the University of Hradec Králové in the Czech Republic and the University of Sussex in the UK.

At home, Shayron regularly visits secondary schools to speak with students about local identity and the importance of preserving their heritage. He also contributes to media outlets and conducts community-based research to collect and safeguard oral histories.

In 2020, his photography project The Creoles of the Nicaribbean won the national ExpoPhoto Nicaragua competition. Through a powerful series of portraits, he highlighted the distinctiveness of the Afrodescendant Creole communities of Great Corn Island and Pearl Lagoon, aiming to challenge stereotypes and promote anti-racist narratives.

In 2021, Shayron founded The Corn Islands Virtual Library, a digital space for locals and researchers to explore the islands’ rich cultural heritage. Officially launched in May 2023 with the support of the STS Initiative, the platform brings together stories, documents, and historical resources, thanks to the contributions of community members committed to preserving their history. In 2025, he co-founded The Corn Islands Virtual Museum, an extension of the library focused on showcasing the tangible heritage of the Corn Islands.

Though his work spans tourism, media, education, and youth initiatives, what truly defines Shayron is his unwavering dedication to honouring and safeguarding the heritage of his home—the Corn Islands.
